The Port William Historical Society invites residents and visitors to step back in time during Pioneer Day, held at the historic Masterson House. This special event offers a glimpse into late 18th-century frontier life, showcasing the skills, challenges, and resilience of early settlers in the region.

Set against the backdrop of one of the area's oldest and most storied homes, Pioneer Day highlights the contrast between rugged pioneer living and the relative opulence of the Masterson House—an estate that once served as Port William’s first courthouse, city hall, Methodist church, and community gathering place.

Guests can enjoy a variety of hands-on demonstrations and activities, including fire-starting without matches, butter churning, candle dipping, textile looming, tool forging, traditional games, music, storytellers, and more—skills that were once a daily part of life on the frontier.

A major feature of the event is the participation of the Kentucky Corps of Longriflemen, who will set up an authentic fur trappers’ camp and demonstrate the historical use and significance of Kentucky Longrifles.

The combination of frontiersmen and wealthy landowners on display serves as a powerful reminder of the cooperation and mutual reliance that were necessary for survival and progress in early Kentucky. This spirit of unity echoes the symbolism of the Kentucky State Flag—depicting two people from different walks of life shaking hands—and the state motto: “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Pioneer Day is both a celebration and an educational opportunity—connecting the community with its rich heritage and ensuring future generations understand the struggles and triumphs of those who came before. The event promises fun, fellowship, and a meaningful journey into the past.
