The only program of its kind in the US, Salem Community College’s (SCC) Scientific Glass Technology (A.A.S.) degree program combines classroom study along with the development of the glassmaking skills and techniques required for advanced glass fabrication. Students develop a solid understanding of scientific glassblowing through hand-on glass courses throughout all four semesters of the program.
Scientific glassblowers create glass apparatus for scientific research in laboratories, universities, and in industry; they play a vital role in diverse avenues of inquiry. Graduates are career ready upon graduation and have earned positions with employers here in NJ, throughout the US, and around the world. As SCC’s program is the only in the US offering a degree focused in this highly specialized and in demand skill, employers reach out to the college directly with employment opportunities.
SCC’s Glass Art curriculum provides students with a program of study that focuses on exploring contemporary glass. The curriculum includes flameworking, glassblowing, kilnforming and casting, and cold working techniques. The program additionally emphasizes other disciplinary studies through strong two-dimensional and three-dimensional design courses, art history, and portfolio and professional practice development.
Graduates of the program have successfully pursued Bachelor and Master of Fine Art degrees and have gained immediate employment in art institutions, production and design studios, as artist assistants, as demonstrating artists, teaching artists, and have successfully launch their own businesses and art careers.
