Summer FREE Family craft workshops
As part of our upcoming exhibition 'Unfolding Welsh Textiles Past & Present' the exhibiting makers will be holding FREE taster textile workshops in August.
TEXTILE TASTERS WORKSHOPS:
Between 11am and 4pm each day (latest arrival for tasters would be 3pm)
Free drop in sessions and demonstrations for all ages.
(Children under 16 yrs will need to be accompanied by an adult)
You might like to come on several days to enjoy a variety of textile experiences. There will be plenty to see as well as hands-on activities.
These are drop in sessions so spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Saturday 23rd August
Heart Brooches with the Cutting Edge Textiles Group
Stitch a heart brooch made from an old wool blanket.
Felt Flowers with Mandy Nash
Using merino wool fleece, make a colourful felt flower, which can be made into a brooch or stitched onto a hat or bag.
Sunday 24th August
Fabric Painting with Cutting Edge Textiles Group
Play with colour on fabric, painting with wax crayons, which an option to add hand or machine stitching.
Felt Collage with Mandy Nash
Experiment with fabric and wool to felt a richly, textured piece, which provides a perfect canvas for hand and machine stitching.
Monday 25th August
Stitching with Fabric Off cuts with Lynda Shell
Learn how to sew together recycled off cuts of fabric to create a patchwork purse or cushion cover.
Weaving with Jill Riley
An introduction to the weaving process. Have a go on a table loom or make an off loom sample to take away.
Tuesday 26th August
Natural Dyeing with Claire Cawte
Explore the alchemy of natural dyes in this sensory taster workshop. Using petals and leaves, bundle your fabric and let it simmer in the dye pot (approx 1 hour). Watch as nature’s magic reveals delicate patterns and earthy hues on cloth.
Block Printing with Lynda Shell
Using simple pre made block designs, experiment and explore some of the basic principles of pattern repeat and placement to create block printed patterns on fabric.
Wednesday 27th August
Stitched Pin Cushion with Alison Moger
Make a small pincushion using scraps of fabric and colourful thread with the recycling ethos in mind, experimenting with stitch methods such as simple sashiko and boro inspired work.
Shibori Dyeing with Lynda Shell
Learn how to manipulate fabric in a variety of ways to create exciting dyed patterns on fabric. You will use techniques such as folding, twisting, binding and stitching along with the tying in of various of shapes and objects to create a pattern.
Thursday 28th August
Fabric Appliqué with Mandy Nash
Learn how to use Bondaweb to recycle old fabric, which can used to create collages or used liven up your garments.
Feltmaking with Claire Cawte
Discover the beauty of natural fibres in this hands-on felt-making taster. Using soft wool, earthy tones and unusual fibres, create a small, nature-inspired piece of felt.
Friday 29th August
Needlefelting with Claire Cawte
Have fun creating small sculptures in wool, using your imagination to create realistic or magical creatures.
Weaving with Jill Riley
