What's a homecoming? If you're unfamiliar with this rural church tradition, no problem! Think of Homecoming like a Family Reunion, a Block Party, and Dia de los Muertos all rolled in to one. At Long's United Methodist Church, we celebrate homecoming by gathering for the traditional 11am Sunday worship service. During the service, we'll hear a little history of the church and the community. We like to have to have special music for the service, usually some bluegrass gospel hymns. Then afterward, we have a potluck out on the lawn. This year we'll have pulled pork barbeque. If you can, bring a side, a salad, or a dessert. If you can't, come as you are! We'll have yard games and fun activities for kids.
The Homecoming service takes up a special offering to support the Cemetery fund, and it's often a day when family show up to clean up and redecorate the graves of their loved ones. We'll have it freshly mowed. Even if you don't know anyone buried in Long's Community Cemetery, Homecoming is a great day to walk through the cemetery, learn some names, and honor the dead by visiting them. Someday we'll be lying with them, may as well get to know them now!
Homecoming is about celebrating life and honoring those who have died. You can do this for yourself, or set an intention to come and participate in this community tradition on behalf of your family and those you have lost. We look forward to greeting you!
