This is a wonderful undulating 11.5 mile walk, from Chilham that covers the diverse countryside around the village, using parts of the Stour Valley Walk and North Downs Way, as well as lesser-used bridleways and footpaths.
Heading out on the North Downs Way along Mountain Street, we reach the edge of King's Wood, to then drop down through the delightful Godmersham Park, and there is an ever improving view of the house on the descent. Famous for all its Jane Austen connections, Godmersham Park was once owned by Austen's brother Edward Knight, and it allegedly inspired her in the writings of both Mansfield Park and Pride & Prejudice.
After crossing the River Stour and the busy A28, our route joins the Stour Valley Walk, where we then start to climb steadily uphill, passing through farmland and wooded areas, including a section of Denge Wood, before leaving the SVW, to head along the northern edge of Chilham Lake.
We pass beside Chilham Mill, and on reaching Julliberrie Downs, we re-join the SVW, when arriving at Catha's Seat there are good views of Chilham Castle to be had. We finish the walk, by returning to Mountain Street and back into the village, where no doubt the group will finish off in the Woolpack for post walk socialising.
As ever there will be usual short lunch stop, so don't forget to pack your sarnies and other nibbles into your rucksack, there will also be water breaks when needed.
