Facing conscription, University of South Carolina graduate L. Glen Inabinet entered the Army in 1968. Scarcely six months later, he was fighting mud, mosquitos, and Vietcong adversaries in the heart of the Mekong Delts. Inabinet served as a member fo a 105mm howitzer section, as a radio telephone operator with an artillery forward observer team, and as a manager of his battery's equipment records. He filled in on short-handed gun crews, performed guard duty, defended against enemy attack, and countered stateside-based harassment with an unflagging sense of humor.
Inabinet's account of his 401 days in Mekong, enhanced by his photographs of Vietnam's land and peoples as well as his near-daily letters to his wife, provides unique insight into the GI's daily grind and dangers. In a troubled war, Inabinet remained convinved of the strengths of faith and of camaraderie with brothers-in arms.
L. Glen Inabinet, researcher, photographer, freelance writer, and retired high school history teacher, is active in local and state historical societies and veterans' organizations. He lives in Camden, South Carolina.
