Description
In this 6-week course, we will study the basic movements of Samba de Gafieira, as well as fundamental techniques required at any level: posture and body organization, embrace and connection, grounding and weight transfer.
The course is suitable for both beginners and experienced dancers who want to improve their basics or steal some ideas from Samba for their favorite dance. No prior experience required.
Samba de Gafieira is a popular Brazilian partner dance. It can be slow and romantic or fast and expressive, but always elegant and joyful. It can be danced to different types of music, including Bossa Nova, Pagode, Samba, MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), as well as non-Brazilian styles.
While it shares posture, embrace, and some footwork with tango, Samba de Gafieira has a natural swing ("ginga") and body dynamics coming from its Afro-Brazilian roots and giving it a playful and lively energy. Samba de Gafieira originated in Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s from the Maxixe dance and continues to evolve today. Once popular mainly in Brazil, now it is gaining recognition throughout the world, including the United States. As Brazilians say, "O Samba vai dominar o mundo!" ("Samba will take over the world!")
