Join us for a walk that explores how safe and accessible our city is for children. We’ll journey through a commercial area and nearby residential streets, imagining ourselves as both children and adults navigating the urban environment. Where do kids want to go and what stands in their way? Along the route, we’ll stop by Sunnyside School and reflect on how the built environment shapes children’s ability to move freely and independently. Together, we’ll evaluate how many destinations are within reach for children compared to adults and discuss how planning can better support their walkability
WALK NOTES: busy sidewalks, fast paced, covering lots of ground, fun for kids, breaks offered along the way, no dogs please - except service dogs, children aged 10+ are welcome!
MEETING SPOT: Poppy Plazza; at the intersection of Memorial DR NW and 10 ST NW, and 10 ST NW
WALK LEADER: Zahra Tavakoli is a Transportation Planner at HDR and holds a PhD in Transportation from Polytechnique Montréal. Her work explores how built environments shape people’s everyday movement, with a focus on accessibility and walkability. She is passionate about creating inclusive, people-friendly cities and enjoys sparking community conversations about the challenges and possibilities of walking in urban spaces.
