The Summary of the Incident of Abuse
--------------------------------------------
On May 29, 2025, an 11-year-old nonverbal and profoundly autistic child, Purnayan Mohanta (also known as Tirtha), returned home from school with multiple unexplained and serious injuries. Although he is 11 years old, he behaves like a 4-year-old and was unable to protect himself or communicate about the incident of abuse.
The family doctor and Alberta Children’s Hospital have confirmed that his injuries include a bloody scratch on his inner thigh, red marks on his neck, chin, and shoulder, and bite-like wounds on his arm. Medical assessments by both the family doctor and the Alberta Children’s Hospital concluded that these injuries do not appear to be accidental, prompting concerns of physical or potential sexual abuse and severe neglect while under the school’s supervision.
Unfortunately, despite multiple attempts to find explanations from school officials, including the assistant principal and the principal, the family didn't get any satisfactory responses. The school’s internal investigation has been dismissive and inadequate. Although the parents have filed a police report and reached out to multiple authorities, the police continue to rely on the school’s investigation, which has left the family feel devastated and unheard.
The family had been informed that the class teacher and attendance records showed no mention of any issues or incidents, that was shocking for the family. The family is extremely upset with this initial investigation and feels deeply traumatized. The family firmly believes that the child has been the victim of abuse and neglect under school’s supervision, prompting them to request a more thorough investigation.
They have escalated the matter to the Ministry of Education and the Education Director. However, this situation has shaken the trust in the school system significantly. The family has the right to understand how these injuries occurred and seek justice for any mistreatment or abuse. The family is deeply saddened and affected by the lack of accountability and transparency regarding the injuries and is afraid to send the child to school.
Given these difficult circumstances, the family needs moral and empathetic support and guidance from the society to know the truth behind the incident, identify the offender and seek justice for such brutal abuse. In addition, the authority must take preventative measures so that no other child or family has to go through such traumatic experience.
We demand an independent investigation by law enforcement and Alberta Children’s Services, accountability from all involved at the School and the Calgary Board of Education, a recovery plan for the child including psychological support and immediate safety measures for him and other vulnerable students.
