Featuring a potpourri of both classical and jazz compositions presented as part of the Academy and APP residency series in partnership with the University of Calgary School of Performing Arts . The Program will include the world premiere of David' Braid's Concerto No. 2 "De Veluwe" for Tenor Saxophone and Small Orchestra, as well as performances from students from both institutions.
Mark DeJong holds degrees from the University of Calgary, (BMus) and jazz performance from Rutgers University (MMus). Active as a performer and clinician throughout North America, Mark has numerous recording credits and appearances at festivals across the country. He recently performed the music of Michael Brecker featuring multiple Grammy award-winning composer/pianist Gil Goldstein at the Bella Concert Hall. He is the co-leader of YYC award-winning Redline Trio which plays weekly at Betty Lou's Library. Mark has recently recorded a new saxophone concerto with Canadian composer David Braid, and was recently featured as a soloist with vocalist Sarah Slean performing the music of Joni Mitchell with the Vancouver Symphony, the Calgary Philharmonic and the Saskatoon Symphony. He has toured or performed with Laila Biali, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, and Canada's iconic Shuffle Demons while on tour in Panama and Cuba. He appeared as a feature artist at the World Expo in Shanghai, China, as well as the legendary Blue Note in New York.
David Braid, hailed by the Canadian Press as "one of Canada's true Renaissance men," is an acclaimed composer, pianist, and improviser, and a four-time Juno Award winner. A Steinway Artist and Composer-in-Residence with the Sinfonia UK Collective, he also holds positions at the Danish National Music Conservatory and the University of Liverpool. Originally recognized as a top jazz pianist, Braid transitioned into chamber and film composition, earning praise for his stylistic versatility and emotional depth. His works, such as the chamber album FLOW and choral piece "Corona Divinae Misericordiae", have garnered critical acclaim and award nominations. He has toured extensively worldwide, and his film scores—including for Born to Be Blue and Delia’s Gone—have earned multiple Canadian Screen Awards and international recognition.
