Toronto-based pianist, composer, and bandleader Anthony D’Alessandro brings his hard-swinging, straight-ahead style to the JazzYYC Summer Festival, joined by New York City trumpet/vocal sensation Benny Benack III. Known for his “natural feeling for swing and groove” (WholeNote Magazine) and scintillating technique, D’Alessandro has toured extensively across Canada, the U.S., South America, and Europe, performing at top venues like Birdland, Koerner Hall, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
His 2024 debut album Searchin’, featuring Benack, debuted to critical acclaim—described as “a gem of an album” (Jersey Jazz Magazine) and “uplifting and feel-good” (Paris Move). Their onstage chemistry and shared love for classic swing and soulful improvisation make this collaboration an absolute highlight of the summer.
Benny Benack III, a charismatic double-threat on trumpet and vocals, has headlined major jazz festivals worldwide and is known for his electrifying live shows and modern take on the American songbook. A finalist in the Thelonious Monk Competition and a top-three winner in the Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition, his recent album Third Time’s the Charm hit #2 on the JazzWeek charts.
Rounding out the quartet are two of Canada’s most in-demand rhythm section players: Ernesto Cervini on drums and Jonathan Chapman on bass. Together, they’ll deliver a night of swinging, straight-ahead jazz full of groove, interplay, and energy.
