BIG MONTHLY RIDEOUT No. 4 The Great North Run (Nigel Beck)
Hawes & Devil’s Bridge
Sunday 6th July 2025
This run is one of Nigel Beck’s and he will lead. Please arrive with a full tank and tyre pressures checked as usual. The drop-off system is now standard in our runs.
MEET McDonald’s, Pilsworth BL9 8RD
Wheels roll at 10:00
Section 1
Head north on the mighty M66 to the A56 signposted Rawtenstall
Bear left on the A56 (Haslingden Bypass) – do not go to Rawtenstall
Straight on at roundabout SP Burnley/M65
Straight on at next roundabout, under M65 onto the A6068 SP Padiham/Fence
Straight through two sets lights on A6068 SP Fence/Barrowford
Through Fence (a village, not a stunt) straight over mini roundabout
At big roundabout, take first left SP Barrowford A682
Stay on this road through Blacko A682 to the end – Gisburn
At Gisburn, turn right onto A59 and IMMEDIATE left onto A682 SP Settle
Follow to the very end.
At Junction (A65) turn left through Long Preston (A65)
At roundabout turn right SP Settle onto the B6480
Re-group at the square in Settle. There is decent fuel here, too – worth topping up.
Carry on through Settle past petrol station – turn right just before the river onto B6479 SP Horton on Ribblesdale – we should all be together at this point so won’t miss it.
Stay on B6479 to the end – a fairly long meandering road.
At end (Ribblehead viaduct will be on your left) – turn right onto B6255 to Hawes.
Another reasonably long stretch, right to the end.
At end the road joins the A684 – go straight on into the village and look to the Pen Y Garth Café on the left hand side, where we will park up for tea and cake/brunch, or chips from the chippy over the road.
Section 2
Go out of Hawes the way we came in – however, bear right immediately onto A684 Sedburgh. Stay on this road.
As we come into Sedburgh, I will regroup us as it’s a bit fiddly.
We will be joining the A683 SP Kirkby Lonsdale and Barbon
Stay on the A683 to the end.
Devil’s Bridge is on the right hand side – ice cream and jump off the bridge time!
Section 3
Returning Home:
We will return home via the A65 to Long Preston.
Turn right onto the A682 Gisburn, retracing our steps.
At Gisburn, turn right then left onto the A682 back to Barrowford.
[some may wish to cut down to Lancaster and the M6 from Devil’s Bridge – let us know if you’re going to do this, so we don’t worry about you]
At Barrowford, jump on the M65 and turn off onto the A56 SP Bury [The Preston area riders might want to carry on the M65 to Preston and the M6]
The A56 leads to the M66 and back to McDonalds in Pilsworth.
We will be riding on some of the best roads in Britain, so the dull bits at the start and finish are very well worth doing!
Remember tyre pressures, fuel and ice cream money.
