‘The Things Around Us’
Kilanerin Tidy Towns is delighted to introduce ‘The Things Around Us’, an exciting new community-collection project exploring the objects owned by ordinary people that will help reveal the social history of Kilanerin and the wider community.
Taking place in The Shamrock Hall across June, the project has been devised by artist/folklorist Michael Fortune in conjunction with Dave Williams and Conor Murphy from Kilanerin Tidy Towns.
The group will be hosting a series of pop-up road-show styled sessions on four dates in the hall and are inviting people from around the community to bring their object along to tell them all about it.
The project is centred around people and the objects they hold and cherish within their homes, their farms, their yards, or their lives. Some examples are pictured on the poster below. Anything from old farming implements or more recent objects such as the first mobile phone ever owned are all relevant and the lads would be delighted to hear the story or stories behind them. Every aspect of Irish social history will be explored through the objects and we hope to widen conversations around our lives and our history.
As the village has become home to many people from Ireland and abroad in recent years, we hope to engage these new residents with this project to support and strengthen the sense of community in the area.
So, if you have an old letter, an old tool or anything with a story, come along to the Shamrock Hall on the dates and times listed below and share it with Michael, Dave and Conor where they will take photographs and record its history. An exhibition of the findings will be presented later in the year.
