Egy road movie, amely meglepően sok rokonvonást mutat a Szelíd motorosokkal. Hogy ténylegesen hatott-e Dennis Hopper filmje a kiemelkedő európai rendezőre, Michelangelo Antonionira? Ki tudja? Egy film előkészítése gyakran évekkel a forgatás előtt megkezdődik, Antonioni pedig már 1967-ben ellátogatott az Egyesült Államokba. (Az utóélet világosabb: a női főszereplő Daria Halprin később összejött az Easy Rider rendezőjével, néhány évig együtt is éltek.) Bár a film zenei szövetét erősen meghatározza a Pink Floyd, van benne egy kis country, Jerry Garcia is gitározik. A rendezői szemszög is nagyon izgalmas: a Halál-völgy Európából nézve. A kritika vegyesen viszonyult hozzá, ugyanis főleg a történetre koncentráltak. Ez azonban nem feltétlenül szerencsés egy olyan rendező esetében, aki minden filmjében hoz valami újat a filmnyelvbe. A road movie with a surprising amount in common with Easy Rider. Did Dennis Hopper’s film really influence the outstanding European director Michelangelo Antonioni? Who knows? Prep for a film often begins years before shooting starts and Antonioni had already visited the United States in 1967. (Subsequent events are clearer: The female lead Daria Halprin later shacked up with the director of Easy Rider, they lived together for several years.) Although the film’s musical patchwork is strongly influenced by Pink Floyd, there’s also a touch of country, and Jerry Garcia on guitar. The perspective of the director is particularly fascinating: Death Valley, as viewed from Europe. Reviews were mixed, as critics primarily focused on the plot. This is not necessarily the way to go, though, when it comes to a director who adds something new to the language of film in each of his releases. And this film is a case in point.
