“Waacking on Thin Line – Threading the kNot…Yet“

artists: YCS, Iuana, Luci, Octavia, Una Toma

curated by: Adela Wagner

Presented within “The Thin Thread Line”, this performance brings waacking into the institutional space of a gallery – a dance style that emerged in 1970s queer clubs in Los Angeles, characterized by expressive, rapid arm movements and theatrical poses. More than a form of dance, waacking embodies cultural memory and a mode of resistance.

“Waacking on Thin Line – Threading the kNot…Yet” explores the body as a site of political articulation, and dance as a practice of imagining queer futures. The title draws inspiration from José Esteban Muñoz’s “Cruising Utopia”, particularly his notion that queerness is “not yet here,” but instead belongs to the realm of potential – a horizon we move toward, collectively. Through shared rhythm and movement, it threads together a queer futurity not as a distant utopia, but as a lived and felt potential already emerging in the now.

Set against a live disco set by YCS, the dance performers: Iuana, Luci, Octavia, and Una Toma are dispersed through the space, posing as sculptural figures, queer bodies rendered static, staged. Through waacking, their gestures trace invisible threads across the room, drawing lines between one another, between the personal and the political.

The work challenges dominant narratives of which bodies and gestures are worthy of preservation and display. It asks how queer presence can inhabit and transform institutional spaces without being assimilated or neutralized – how joy, excess, collectivity, and desire can leave marks within a system that so often privileges restraint and control. As the performers begin to converge, their movements generate a shared choreography of belonging: a momentary archive of queer futures unfolding live, through the body.

This is not only a performance, but an artistic and political intervention — a refusal to move within systemic lines, and a proposal to thread new forms of relation, movement, and visibility.
