THE MASTER (2012)

Tumbling through post-WWII California, alcoholic Navy vet Freddie Quell finds himself aboard the yacht of Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a bizarre religion known as “The Cause.” Freddie devotes himself to Dodd’s services, but as the movement faces scrutiny, the pair’s bond gradually shifts into a strange struggle for dominance.

Largely shot in the deluxe, high-resolution format known as Super Panavision 70, THE MASTER is one of the key works of 21st-century American cinema, anchored by Oscar-nominated performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. Ahead of Paul Thomas Anderson’s newest film, ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, revisit the work he has described as his favorite, presented on gorgeous 70mm film.
