Sophie Vanhomwegen will showcase a collection of older and more recent works that explore the ambiguous spaces between celebration and solitude, connection and withdrawal.
โWhen the Partyโs Over" is a deliberate invocation of Billie Eilishโs songโnot just for its melancholic resonance but for its sharp articulation of emotional ambivalence. The songโs origin storyโborn from Finneas OโConnellโs abrupt departure from a dateโs houseโcaptures a distinctly modern tension: the simultaneous relief of withdrawal and the latent sorrow for what might have been. This duality lies at the heart of Sophieโs artistic practice.
Her mixed-media pieces dissect contemporary existenceโs contradictionsโthe exhaustion beneath performative joy, the isolation within hyperconnectivity, the strange liberation in collapse. Sophie expands the metaphor : the โpartyโ is not just a gathering but a stand-in for love and life itselfโthose fleeting accumulations of experience, euphoric or bruising, that we carry until they dissolve, only to begin again.
After four years of hosting artists in her space, Sophie now steps forward with her own workโpresenting a solo show for the first time.
This exhibition traces a quiet evolution, shaped by encounters and collaborations along the way. While the pieces build on familiar themes, each one offers a slightly new way of looking.
