FR ― Chaque mouvement de cette Deuxième Symphonie illustre musicalement les quatre tempéraments : colérique, flegmatique, mélancolique et sanguin. Ces traits de la personnalité, qui ont été définis par le médecin grec Hippocrate, ont inspiré de nombreuses œuvres d'art. Comme cette gravure sur bois aperçue par Carl Nielsen dans un bar de son pays. Avec sa femme et quelques amis, il a d'abord ri de bon cœur en découvrant ces personnages caricaturaux censés symboliser ces tempéraments. Mais quelques semaines plus tard, Nielsen n’avait toujours pas oublié ces personnages et il a finalement décidé de leur consacrer une symphonie toute entière.
Sanguin et mélancolique, voilà deux adjectifs qui décrivent parfaitement Don Quichotte. En 1897, Richard Strauss décide de dédier un poème symphonique à cet anti-héros de la littérature sorti tout droit de l'imagination de Cervantes. En confiant le premier rôle au violoncelle, Richard Strauss met magistralement en musique les aventures de Don Quichotte.

NL ― Elke beweging van Carl Nielsens Tweede symfonie verklankt een van de vier temperamenten: cholerisch, flegmatisch, melancholisch en sanguinisch. Deze persoonlijkheidstrekken werden ooit gedefinieerd door de Griekse arts Hippocrates en vormden de inspiratie voor heel wat kunstwerken. Zo ook voor een houtsnede die Carl Nielsen in een Deense kroeg zag hangen en de aanleiding vormde voor diens Tweede symfonie.
Een sanguine melancholieker, zo zou men Don Quichot kunnen omschrijven. In 1897 besloot Richard Strauss een symfonisch gedicht te wijden aan deze door Cervantes bedachte literaire antiheld. Met de cello als hoofdpersonage vertaalt Richard Strauss op geniale wijze de avonturen van Don Quichot in muziek.

EN - Each movement of the Second Symphony expresses one of the four temperaments: choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic and sanguine. These personality traits were once defined by the Greek physician Hippocrates and inspired many works of art, including a woodcut Carl Nielsen saw hanging in a Danish pub. Along with his wife and some friends, he initially laughed heartily at the caricatured figures that were supposed to symbolise the four temperaments. But a few weeks later, Nielsen still had not forgotten them and eventually dedicated an entire symphony to them.
A sanguine melancholic, that is how Don Quixote could be described. In 1897, Richard Strauss decided to dedicate a symphonic poem to this literary anti-hero conceived by Cervantes. With the cello as the main character, Richard Strauss ingeniously translated Don Quixote's adventures into music.
