About the event

CONCERT (afternoon) : Cuttin' at the Point
The "Cuttin' at the Point" duo was formed on September 20, 2021, with a simple WhatsApp message: "Can I call you?”

This is how fiddler Alioscia reached out to guitarist Stefano, after having crossed paths with him a few weeks earlier at a folk festival in Northern Italy. The project immediately set out to deeply explore North American folk music, with a particular focus on interpretations that, while contemporary, do not succumb to embellishments or sentimentality. The true character of the band is its energy.

Alioscia soon became interested in Old-Time music through the banjo, an instrument to which he also dedicates his skills as a luthier. For many years, he was active with the trio "Dry and Dusty," with whom he recorded the album "Polly Put the Kettle On." During the pandemic, he produced his first solo album as a multi-instrumentalist engaged in original pieces: "As It Is.”

With "Cuttin' At The Point," he primarily plays the fiddle, allowing the speed of his bow to unleash freely.

Stefano has only recently encountered Old-Time music; however, he feels perfectly at ease on the backup guitar, managing to infuse personality even into the simplicity of rhythmic gestures. In his past as a guitarist, he explored music without mental frameworks, gathering a rich array of experiences from various musical cultures. Thanks to his musicological studies, he also views Old-Time music as a field of research and study.

For this special occasion in Belgium, the duo "Cuttin' At The Point" is joined by their friend, German musician Eléna Samulowsky on the banjo…

Eléna has found her second home in America, where she discovered her passion for old-time and bluegrass music in the Appalachian Mountains. She learned to play and dance at various camps such as Clifftop, Mt. Airy, Swannanoa, Sore Fingers and others. She grew up in Hamburg, is part of the Hannover Hoedown old-time music camp, works currently for the (folk, roots & world music Festival in Rudolstadt and is active in her old-time band „Wings on Strings".
