Public Records, Seventy One Gin, and The Curious Eyes invite you on a transportive journey through rhythm, ritual, and reverie. TRANCE STATE is not just a documentary—it is a kaleidoscopic dream through Moroccan musical soul, inspired by the writings of Paul Bowles and narrated by Patti Smith.
Directed by Jay Bulger \[Beware of Mr. Baker\] and narrated by Patti Smith, TRANCE STATE retraces the legendary path of Paul Bowles' 1949 musical expedition, commissioned by the U.S. Library of Congress. With field recordings by Bill Laswell and an original score that blurs the line between archival and experimental, the film immerses us in Morocco's diverse tribal traditions, where music serves as a vehicle for transcendence and trance.
Following the screening, director Jay Bulger will join us for a Q&A.
