In this eye-opening lecture, Dr. Julian R. Silverman delves into the world of so-called "weight loss soaps," the historical and modern products that promise slimming results without the need for diet or exercise. These claims exploit our perceptions of our bodies, and it's time to uncover the truth behind them.

Dr. Silverman will examine the ingredients and marketing tactics of these products to reveal how they function and why they continue to captivate consumers. As we explore the effects of these soaps on both our physical and mental well-being, we will gain insights into the psychological appeal that keeps these myths alive.

Dr. Julian R. Silverman is a full-time Assistant Professor of Materials Science at The Fashion Institute of Technology and a part-time soap maker. A Haas Fellow at the Science History Institute, he is also active in public science demonstrations throughout New York City.
