In this enlightening lecture, JR Pepper explores the profound roles animals play in the symbolism found within American cemeteries and their significance in guiding us to the next life.

Animals have long been believed to carry important meanings regarding the afterlife, and their representations on tombs and monuments reflect diverse cultural beliefs, protection, and familial connections. By examining these symbols, we uncover deeper insights into the values and beliefs of our ancestors, highlighting the enduring bond between humans and animals in both this life and the next.

JR Pepper, a self-described “professional eccentric,” is an adjunct professor of art history at Brooklyn College and a tour guide at Green-Wood Cemetery. With over two decades of experience in photography and art history, she brings her unique perspective to this compelling topic.
