BK Made Presents: James Esmu

James Esemu is an 23 year-old early-career Toronto-based comedian and grad school drop-out popular for his awkward wordplay jokes. In his signature TikToks & IG Reels, he stutters through corny puns and wriggles in uncomfortable silence, characteristically toeing the line between avuncular and juvenile. 

James’ in-person presence at his shows is nothing short of virtuosic. He is humble, charming, and sensitive to his audience’s energy; he shifts between short-form jokes about being Nigerian, narratives about how expensive the Wendy’s menu has gotten, crowd work with fellow penny-pinchers, and impromptu piano performances riffing off of audience suggestions— which bravely feature but 3 chords.
