Madeleine L'Engle (1918 - 2007) was an American writer probably best known as the author of the young adult speculative fiction novel, A Wrinkle in Time, published in 1962 and awarded the Newbery Medal as the most distinguished contribution to children's literature that year.
For thirty years, L'Engle was writer in residence (and volunteer librarian) at St John the Devine Episcopal Cathedral in New York City. She wrote over 60 books, from poetry to memoirs to a trilogy reflecting on the book of Genesis. Her works reflect both her Christian faith and her strong interest in modern science.
The Rev’d Dr Ruth Carroll is a parish priest in the Church of England. An American, she was a university lecturer and research fellow in English linguistics before ordination.
She is currently on extended study leave at St Francis College.

Ruth will talk about the legacy of Madeleine L'Engle in the sermon as part of Evensong.
