📖 About the Event:
This event celebrates 3 acts during the evening, highlighting the synergy between Classical and Jazz. The program kicks off with Ukrainian-Australian composer, pianist and recording artist, an artist who champions chamber music by female composers, Catherine Likhuta. Catherine is a two-time winner of the International Horn Society Composition Contest (virtuoso division). Her music has been described as exhibiting “high emotional charge, programmatic nature, rhythmic complexity and Ukrainian folk elements.” Catherine holds a Bachelor in Jazz piano degree from Kyiv Glière Music College, a 5-year post-graduate degree in composition from the National Music Academy of Ukraine (Kyiv Conservatory) and a PhD in composition from the University of Queensland. She is a recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence Award from the University of Queensland. Tonight, she will play a set of her works for saxophone and piano with the local sax legend, Andrew Ball, presenting her jazz influenced works dating from 2002-2024, finishing off with the Australian premier of an encore piece commissioned by the American classical saxophonist and music educator, Tim McAllister!
Our second act, featuring classic jazz standards, will be Queensland Conservatorium’s premier jazz vocal ensemble In-Voices directed by Dave Spicer on piano, followed by The QYO Big Band, a 20-piece ensemble, who are part of the world-renowned Queensland Youth Orchestra (QYO) music program. The QYO Big Band consists of some of Queensland’s most talented and emerging instrumental musicians performing music from a variety of big band jazz and swing genres. The members of the auditioned ensemble are students attending schools, universities and music conservatories, aged between 16 and 23. The ensemble is led by accomplished Musical Director, Mr Bohdan Davison, a noted musician, music educator and saxophonist. The QYO Big Band will be highlighting classic jazz repertoire from Gershwin ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ to ‘The Surrey with the Fringe on Top’ and ‘Have You Met Miss Jones? from Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as beautiful melodies from Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. This event is curated and hosted by Ingrid James on behalf of 4MBS & BJC.
