Join us for our next concert in which Adam Bushell (percussion) and Bela Emerson (cello) will play new commissions by New Music Brighton composers, exploring non-standard notation as well as improvisation.
Ric Graebner - "Tutti Frutti"
Lluís Nadal - "Myrage"
Martyn Adams - "The Chasing Tale"
John Hawkins - "Three Wasps"
Roger Harmar - "Finding North"
Chris Gander - "2 percussion Haiku"
Simon Hopkins - "Maranasati"
These scores limit or completely eschew the use of traditional Western musical notation, allowing a wide scope for improvisation on the part of the performers. Although still unusual in the concert repertoire, graphic scoring was used extensively by some of the most influential composers of the post-WWII era, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Cornelius Cardew and George Crumb, as well as by such revolutionary jazz composers as Leo Wadada Smith and Anthony Braxton.
Adam's musical curiosity and sense of adventure have led him to explore traditional folk music, contemporary classical music and experimental improvisation. His regular ensembles include an electro-acoustic improvising duo with Paul Khimasia Morgan, the folk band Duck Soup, and contemporary classical trio Broken Line, and he has worked with musicians including Chris Wood, Steve Beresford, Michael Finnissy and The Copper Family.
Bela is a highly experienced, skilled, and versatile improvising cellist. She uses her beautiful instrument’s full sonic and emotional range to hold and build creative and connective space, for people to explore and be immersed in connected playfulness in the moment.
She works collaboratively and solo, making responsive cello soundscapes for relational movement, including Contact Improvisation (Touch&Play UK, SOMA at Buddhafield, Goldsmiths) and 5Rhythms (with Paul Smith in Brighton & London). She works as a community musician / in healthcare, promoting connection, healing, and transformation, as well as having performed extensively (eg: BBC, Sydney Opera House, Glastonbury), working with other musicians and other types of artists, eg: co-created shows with acrobats, dancers, live artists, filmmakers.
She also facilitates consensual platonic touch sessions in Brighton.
Holding space for people’s sense of freedom and belonging is central to her work.
