Our last action outside Hove Greyhound Stadium, on a sunny Saturday, saw ever-dwindling attendance for this so-called sport, AKA animal abuse. The clock is ticking, and the sand is running out. The same security guard is still not wearing his badge, as reported to Brighton Council last month. The occasional 'educate yourselves, idiots, get a job!' from passing cars with wound-down windows and wound-up drivers (we have, and we're presenting you with the facts and figures you're choosing to ignore) is always offset by the hundreds of beeps from passing drivers who support our action.
We have two distinct zones at the demo, the Waitrose entrance at the top of Nevill Rd is an outreach area of dialogue, where we engage in conversation, share leaflets with all the facts and make sure both the customers going about their weekly shopping, and those entering the stadium's carpark to attend animal abuse masquerading as 'sport' are all aware of our reason for being there. We are grateful for the positive conversations we shared with two members of the public, one of whom we hope will join us in a future action.
Further down Nevil Rd, the walk-in entrance for the actual track is where we hold a more traditional and lively resistance to Coral's exploitation of the greyhounds. With placards and voices raised, we make sure the uneducated punters realise their non-existent compassion for animals will not go unchallenged. Two protests in one, depending on your preffered choice of activism.
The RSPCA, Dogs Trust and Blue Cross have all demanded an end to. Wales has recently banned it, with Scotland looking likely to follow suit.
We are a small but friendly and effective monthly campaign group who are always happy to involve new people in the cause. Don't be shy, join us. We provide everything you need, just bring yourself.
And contrary to the tired old rhetoric, we do have jobs, and it's a weekend that we are happy to give up for the dogs.
