A memorial celebration of the life of Thomas High-Flyer
Son Of an African Name Unknown
Brighton & Hove Black History invites you to join a celebration of the life and strength of Thomas Highflyer, with a special memorial at Woodvale South Chapel.
This special day will be dedicated to honouring the life of an African boy who survived the brutalities of enslavement and found the strength to integrate into his new surroundings in Brighton, despite everything he had lost. There will be music, talks and a short reflection at his grave side.
The mystery of how Thomas came to Brighton is still being unraveled but we know that he was rescued from a slave dhow off East Africa and traveled the world with the British navy before moving to Kemptown and attending St Mark’s school. He was much loved by those who knew him but tragically Tom succumbed to disease age 12 or 13 in 1870.
Brighton & Hove Black History made a landmark legacy restoration of the headstone on his grave in 2018 as a mark of remembrance in keeping his story alive.
This is a social family friendly event and all are welcome to join on the day.
Small refreshments of tea and biscuits will be served.
Bookings on Eventbrite is advisable as spaces are limited
