A mysterious cat with sunglasses brings magic, chaos, and truth to a small town... Whimsical, gently satirical and filled with fantasy and hallucinatory trick photography, this newly-restored Czech New Wave film is a wonderfully imaginative fairytale about collective action for all-ages.
Part magical-realist fairy tale and part gentle social satire, Vojtech Jasný’s The Cassandra Cat (1963, 105 mins) took home the Jury Prize at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival. Mixing wild, hallucinatory trick photography – including lush cinematography by Jaroslav Kucera (Daisies) — with dizzying dance numbers, the children's film revels in fantasy, surrealism and magical realism. Endearing, genuinely whimsical, yet hiding a deep social message, the early Czech New Wave film was banned after the Prague Spring in 1968, sending director Jasný into exile. This sparkling new 4K restoration by the Czech National Archive and Janus Films brings this unique classic back to the big screen!

Eli Wallace, Frank Meadows, and Jessica Ackerley are an improvisational trio with members based between New York City, North Carolina, and Honolulu, HI. They met through the thriving experimental music scene in Brooklyn, NY, having come to the city via their respective locations of California, North Carolina, and Alberta. With various configurations of professional and musical collaborations between each musician over the past few years, they have honed a unique musical language and chemistry as a collective unit. Working together, they expand the boundaries in which sound and communal conversations can manifest by improvising pieces where minuscule textures, sonic ideas, and melodies lay the fertile groundwork for the music to burgeon in different directions within their established sonic environment. In Spring 2022, they released their debut album, “A Maneuver Within,” to critical acclaim with features in Bandcamp’s “Best Experimental Releases 2022,” Wire Magazine, Foxy Digitalis, and Salt Peanuts. Their sophomore follow-up album, a documentation of two different live performances, was released on Notice Recordings on July 1st, 2023, receiving numerous reviews lauding the trio's spontaneity and cohesive sound.
