Following the success of their acclaimed 2020 collaboration Between the Lines, renowned guitarist and songwriter Danny Widdicombe and celebrated jazz trio Trichotomy are back with their new album, IRIDESCENCE. This latest project is a stunning blend of jazz, modern soul and funk —an album that showcases the seamless musical chemistry between Widdicombe and the trio.
“This album feels like such a natural collaboration,” says Danny Widdicombe. “We didn’t really plan out a lot of the music... we had some sketches of songs and just went into the studio. The songs took their shape throughout the session.”
Known for his work with The Wilson Pickers and his acclaimed solo releases, Widdicombe’s distinctive songwriting and masterful guitar playing merge effortlessly with the bold improvisational energy of Trichotomy—featuring pianist Sean Foran, drummer John Parker, and bassist Samuel Vincent. The trio, whose past releases include Fact Finding Mission and Known-Unknown, are recognized for their innovative approach to the trio format, incorporating elements of post-rock, ambient music, and cinematic textures. Their last release To Vanish received critical acclaim, with Jazz Views noting, “Trichotomy’s music has always been vibrant, textural, and smart... The album shows the trio and their new musical partners pushing boundaries and exploring new territories.”
While deeply rooted in jazz, IRIDESCENCE also draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists and genres. Echoes of The Meters’ groove-heavy funk, the soulful warmth of Leon Bridges and Ray LaMontagne, the atmospheric storytelling of Thomas Dybdahl, the dynamic energy of Tingsek & the grooves of Khruangbin weave their way through the album. This fusion of influences creates a sound that is rich, textured, and unbound by genre, offering listeners something truly unique.
“Working with Danny is completely different from all the other collaborations we’ve done,” says pianist Sean Foran. “There’s scope in the music for us to be really creative, but it challenges us to respond to his ideas, lyrics and songwriting craft. These are beautiful songs that really stay with you”.
Building on the foundations of Between the Lines, IRIDESCENCE is a deeper exploration of sonic interplay, with rich harmonies, evocative melodies and lyrics, and a fearless approach to composition and improvisation. With each track, the group pushes their creative boundaries, blurring genres and redefining contemporary jazz & soul.
