The Boulder Junction Public Library presents local author, naturalist and educator, John Bates, on Thursday, July 10, 7 pm, at the Boulder Junction Community Center. Bates will present “Exploring Northern Wisconsin’s State Natural Areas”.
Wisconsin’s State Natural Areas Program was created in 1951, the first such state-sponsored program in the United States. Today, 687 sites have been protected for their outstanding ecological, geological, or archaeological qualities. These represent the last great places in our state. Come hear about many of the best SNAs to paddle, hike and explore in northern Wisconsin.
John Bates is the author of eleven books on the Northwoods and Upper Midwest, and a contributor to eight others. John has been featured on Wisconsin Public Television, PBS news "Brief But Spectacular", and has been a frequent guest on Wisconsin Public Radio. He has worked as a state forest naturalist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and owns Trails North, a naturalist guide service. He also conducts outdoor classes for the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, the North Lakeland Discovery Center, and many others, and gives presentations to numerous organizations. For thirty-five years he has written a biweekly column, "A Northwoods Almanac," for the Lakeland Times in Minocqua, Wisconsin.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. John will be selling and signing books after the program. For questions and further information, please call the library at 715-385-2050 or email
