Join artist Emily Cartwright inside Boston’s magnificent St Botolph’s Church for a creative sketching session inspired by the mysterious carvings hidden among the choir stalls.
This year’s Illuminate theme — Fantastic Beasts of Boston — takes inspiration from the extraordinary misericords: centuries-old wooden seats decorated with mythical creatures, expressive faces, and folktale scenes. These carvings have inspired us to imagine a whole new bestiary for the town — brought to life through lanterns, costume, and performance in Illuminate 2025.
During this hands-on workshop, Emily will guide you through a series of fun and informal drawing exercises, helping you explore the shapes, textures, and stories of these ancient carvings. The session includes quick warm-up sketches followed by time for a more detailed drawing.
Your sketches will directly inspire the lantern designs featured in this year’s Illuminate parade — meaning your artwork could help bring Boston’s Fantastic Beasts to life!
