Calling all Nature Explorers!!! Come and explore Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Helman Tor reserve - the site of our largest ever nature recovery scheme. Kathryn from the Cornwall Wildlife Trust will be co-leading this 6- week after-school programme for a select group of 9-16 year olds interested in getting close to nature.
Dates are;
12th, 19thth and 26th June
3rd, 17th and 24th July (no session on 10th July)
All of our sessions will begin in Breney Common, an area once covered by mineworks, this is a stunning example of nature’s ability to heal the wounds of an industrial past. Our plan is to have a different nature focus each week including birds, dormice, minibeasts, plants and geology. Activities will range from pond dipping, using tools to make boxes for dormice and clear vegetation, nature arts and crafts and games. There will also be free time to play and explore.
All of these sessions will take place outdoors so appropriate clothing and footwear are essential. We do have access to facilities and a dry space at Gunwen Chapel though so we can take shelter if conditions are really against us.
We will be cooking a hearty soup to share with the group each week and will enjoy it with bread to fill everyone up after our activities. Nature Explorers are invited to bring a refillable water bottle with them please and snacks if needed.
We are planning on having this as quality 'back-to-nature' time so are asking that screens/ mobiles etc are left at home or in bags when we go and enjoy the outdoors. We can lock the hall so everything will be secure. Kathy King will be taking plenty of photos to document our adventures and can share them with the group afterwards via a private whatsapp group.
We will celebrate the end of the project with a family session where we can all go up to the tor itself and take part in some planting activities all together. It will give the young people a chance to share what they have learned and experienced with someone special to them :-)

We will be able to organise transport from St Austell if getting there and back is difficult.
The cost of this fabulous opportunity is £10/ session to include 2hrs of nature-based activities with both Wild Wonder and Wisdom instructors and Cornwall Wildlife Trust project leaders, all tools and resources, soup and bread and hire of the hall for facilities and a dry space. This is to be booked as a block of £60.
Half of our places are available your young people signed up with St Austell Healthcare's youth social prescribing team too :-)
Please do get in touch if you need help with transport. We won't be able to pick/up and collect everyone but we will do our best to organise lift shares to minimise travel costs.
