"The First Labor Day" at the Bluffton Gullah Cultural Heritage Center

Although Labor Day was officially established in 1894, the first true Labor Day arguably occurred thirty years earlier, on January 1, 1863, when the largest enslaved labor force was emancipated.

Join us for a vibrant, artistic celebration honoring the history and achievements of this emancipated workforce, recognizing the genius, innovation, creativity, and resilience reflected in the cities, towns, businesses, and institutions they built.
