What We Know, What We Wish: Author Event and Discussion

The Jonathan Fisher House, Blue Hill Public Library, and Blue Hill Books will co-sponsor a panel discussion on the new book What We Know, What We Wish: Maine Statehood, Historical Commemoration, and the Urgency of Public History on Tuesday, July 22 at 7:00 PM in the Howard Room at the Blue Hill Public Library. The event is free to the public and all are welcome!

Panelists include Liam Riordan, co-editor and professor of history at UMaine; contributors Kevin D. Murphy (Vanderbilt University) and Michael McVaugh (UNC); and moderator Hannah Cyrus, Jonathan Fisher House board member.

The book reflects on Maine’s 2020 statehood bicentennial and the broader challenges of commemorating the past in ways that are inclusive, collaborative, and civically engaged. Essays explore how diverse voices—from academics to Wabanaki representatives—worked together to rethink historical memory and public history practice. The volume argues for deeper partnerships between scholars, cultural institutions, and communities to build a more dynamic and reflective approach to history.
