Holy Listening: Discerning God's Will in Our Lives

Ever struggle to know the right choice? Have you prayed about a job change, relationship decision, a big move or other important decision only to feel continued uncertainty? It could be simply that you have a longing for greater awareness and to better listen to the Holy Spirit in your day-to-day encounters with others.

Holy Listening based on St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Rules of Discernment is a deeply spiritual and attentive way of listening that helps someone notice how God is working in their life. It’s not just about hearing words but about perceiving the movements of the soul – consolation, desolation, peace, or agitation – as indicators of God’s presence and guidance. Through Holy Listening, we learn to listen to our own interior movements. We begin to understand feelings, thoughts, and desires that draw us toward or away from God. As we practice this way of listening, we become attuned to subtle shifts in our own interior life and notice patterns of consolation and desolation. We learn to name these movements without judgment and without problem-solving. Through Holy Listening, we let go of control of the conversation or outcome and seek Holy Detachment or true freedom. In this state, the Holy Spirit truly guides us on our life’s path, and we are free to let go of our own agenda.
