AIRNESS by CHELSEA MERCANTEL

Synopsis: When Nina enters her first air guitar competition, she thinks winning it all will be easy. But as she befriends a group of charismatic nerds all committed to becoming the next

champion, she learns that there is much more to this art form than playing pretend.

Specific age is flexible. All characters are in their 20s and 30s. All air guitarists are veterans except Nina.

The Nina aka Nina O'Neal: Young woman, talented guitarist, unsure about her air guitar adventure. Kind but very rooted in her own opinions. Capable of handling herself, but clearly dealing with some insecurity and low self-esteem. Eventually works her way up to a Joan Jett meets Bruce Springsteen stage persona, but this should not appear until the end of the show whereas the others exhibit some of these traits throughout the show

Shreddy Eddy aka Ed Leary: the longest of the veterans, with a very deep understanding of the art form. tough with a heart of gold, towards the older end with a working class Eddie Van Halen stage persona

Golden Thunder aka Gabe Partridge: air guitar purist who sometimes gets carried away in his love for the art form. Nice guy but intense. middle of the age range with an in your face Angus Young but shiny stage persona (must be played by an actor of color).

Facebender aka Mark Lender: might not be the best air guitarist in the room, but will make everyone feel it. Always there with a helping hand or a word of encouragement. Sweet, with old school D&D bard energy. Towards the older end, with a Pete Townsend meets Beethoven stage persona (must be played by a white actor).

Cannibal Queen aka Astrid Anderson: a technically unbelievable classical guitarist who can translate much of that precision to her air guitar. Prickly and guarded, opinionated and passionate. On stage she's the villain and she loves it. Nico meets Maleficent stage persona.

D'Vicious aka David Cooper: the young hotshot of the group. A great all-around package of a performer. Has begun to pull away since he achieved notoriety. Charming, charismatic with an air of self-confidence. Also jealous and self-absorbed with deep insecurity. 21st century Jimi Hendrix stage persona.

Announcer/Sprite Exec/Hooded figure: serves as the excitable announcer for the air guitar competitions and embodies a couple of other characters who are necessary to the show. Must be able to switch between simple characters clearly and effectively, and most importantly, must be the definition of hype.
