Shadows (1958)

This September, the Drexel Theatre is dedicating Mondays to a director who took risks, broke rules, and created lasting portraits of raw humanity. It’s “John Cassavetes: Indie Pioneer.”

SHADOWS: Cassavetes’ first feature is a landmark of American independent cinema. Set against New York’s Beat scene in the 1950s, the film follows the lives of three Black siblings (two struggling jazz musician brothers and their light-skinned sister) as they search for love and success in the Big Apple. Shot with handheld cameras, a non-professional cast, and a largely improvised script, the film pulses with jazz rhythms and emotional spontaneity.
