1933 World’s Fair – Chicago - Century of Progress Homes
A special weekend meetup, June 7th 10:30am-4:00pm, 215 Lake Front Dr., Beverly Shores, Indiana. The 5 homes are situated in the Indiana Dunes National Park.
The Century of Progress Architectural District is a historic district in Beverly Shores, Indiana. The district is on Lake Shore Drive within the Indiana Dunes National Park. The district comprises five buildings, all from the Homes of Tomorrow Exhibition from the 1933 Century of Progress World's Fair which took place in Chicago. Intended to display the future of housing, the Century of Progress Homes reflect a variety of designs, experimental materials and new technologies. On June 30, 1986, the district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Beverly Shores–Century of Progress Architectural District.
We’ll spend roughly 3hrs sketching on the shore, from 10:30-1:30pm. (this is not a tour nor will we be going inside any of the houses, just sketching outside) Then head to Goblin and the Grocer for lunch, 2:00-4:00pm. I know the owner and she is prepared to have us at her restaurant. She has graciously offered us the Event Room or if it’s nice out there’s an expansive patio. We can eat n sketch as an option. There is a beach that you can visit as well. It’s beautiful and peaceful. And on a clear day you can see the Chicago Skyline.
IMPORTANT – TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM:
If you plan to drive/carpool: To get a parking spot by the beach a couple blocks away from the site, you must purchase a one-day National Dunes State Park Permit Pass for $7.00, if not you will get ticketed. This permit can be purchased at the corner gas station across from the South Shore Line station or you can google on how to purchase online.
If you plan to take the South Shore Line from downtown Chicago (highly recommended + you can sketch on the train!): The 503 train leaves Millenium Station @ 8:30am and arrives in Beverly Shores @ 9:46am. IF YOU PLAN TO TAKE THIS MODE OF TRANSPORTATION, you will get off at the Beverly Shores stop and I can drive you to the sketch site. I can take 4 ppl. I can take this trip multiple times to get people to the site. You can also walk to the site but it’s about 1.5 miles. (please verify all train info via google – South Shore Train Schedules)
There are two trains that head back to Millenium Station. Train 610 leaves @4:05pm and arrives @5:24pm and Train 510 leaves @5:38pm and arrives @6:56pm.
