This fall, the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum (MMGM) and the MP² Research Team invite geologists, students, and mineral enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of granitic pegmatites with expert pegmatologists at the Maine Pegmatite Workshop.
Set in the heart of western Maine — one of the most mineral-rich regions in North America — the workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn beside some of the world’s leading pegmatologists. For four intensive days, participants will split their time between the classroom and the field: exploring four active and historic pegmatite quarries, examining freshly exposed minerals, and even collecting their own specimens at these exclusive, closed locations.
In the classroom, expert faculty will present the latest information and theories on pegmatite paragenesis, mineralogy, and petrology, guiding participants from foundational principles up through current research and discoveries. With plenty of time for open discussion and one-on-one knowledge sharing, the workshop is designed to be as collaborative as it is comprehensive.
Maine’s unique abundance of pegmatites, mineral diversity, and storied mining history make it the perfect living classroom for this workshop. Whether you’re expanding your research, advancing your teaching or deepening your personal passion for minerals, the Maine Pegmatite Workshop promises an unparalleled educational experience.
