Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is a Slow Roll?
A Slow Roll is a leisurely group bicycle ride that emphasizes community, inclusivity, and enjoyment of the surroundings over speed or distance. Participants of all ages and skill levels are welcome, making it a family-friendly event. The pace is relaxed, allowing riders to chat, take in the scenery, and safely navigate the route together. These rides often feature routes through scenic or culturally significant areas of a city, and they prioritize safety with minimal traffic. Slow roll bike rides are a great way to promote cycling, build community connections, and explore your local area in a fun and relaxed setting.
2. Who can participate in the slow roll bike ride?
Anyone can participate! The ride is designed to be family-friendly and suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels. Children must be accompanied by an adult and can ride in trailers or tag-alongs. Children who want to ride their bike must be supervised by an adult and remain with the group at all times.
3. Do I need to register in advance and does it cost anything?
It's free and no registration is required. Just arrive on the day!
4. What type of bike do I need?
Any bike in good working condition is welcome! Road bikes, mountain bikes, cruisers, or even tandems - if it rolls, it's good to go. Just make sure it's tuned up and ready to ride. For safety reasons, we don't recommend bikes with training wheels or balance bikes, as they may struggle to keep up with the group.
5. What should I bring with me?
Essential items: Your bike, a helmet, and water. Consider bringing sunscreen and sun protection. Optional extras: a snack, basic bike repair kit, and spare tube. But don't worry - our route is short, so walking back isn't a hassle if needed.
6. What is the route?
Please see the address at the top of the event.
7. How long does the ride usually last?
The duration of the ride depends on the pace of the group, but typically, a 3 to 5 mile slow roll ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, including any stops.
8. What if I don’t have a bike?
Ask a friend and see if you can borrow one! You could also put a call out on the Bike Walk Berwyn page to ask if anyone would be willing to lend a bike on the day.
9. What if it rains or snows?
If there is light rain or snow, we'll keep riding! But if the weather forecast predicts unsafe weather, including thunderstorms or heavy snow, then we will cancel the event and notify you on the event page.
10. Are helmets required?
Helmets are not required by Illinois law, but are strongly recommended for your safety.
11. Can I bring my dog?
Pets are not allowed on slow roll bike rides for safety reasons. It’s best to leave your furry friends at home.
12. Are there restrooms along the route?
We cannot guarantee bathroom access along the route, however, we do pass businesses that may permit bathroom access.
13. How can I get involved or volunteer?
Contact Karin Nangreave or Matt Olson to find out how you can help. We are always looking for people to "cork" traffic to make sure people can cross safely!
