The Chekere: Rhythms and Techniques with Brian Rice

Originally from Africa, the chekere (also known as abê in Brazil) plays a vital role in Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, and popular music traditions. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn traditional rhythms from Cuban Güiro music and Brazilian Maracatú while developing technique and creative fluency on the instrument. Topics include rhythms and stylistic nuances from Cuba and Brazil, playing techniques for tone, articulation, and speed, characteristics of different chekeres (glass, plastic, wood, shell beads), and tips for selecting or making your own chekere. Open to all levels. Instruments will be provided for use in class. (Note: The chekere is a loud instrument—earplugs are recommended.)
