Dancers of all levels are welcome, and here are some thoughts about what it means to have a queer contact improvisation jam:
This is both an affinity space and a space for imaginative play. This jam is for people who want to move with others who have felt constrained or harmed by the cisnormative, heteronormative, allonormative society and culture we live in. We envision a jam where we can begin and continue to create new, queerer, expansive worlds through the implementation, integration, and experimentation of small-scale changes that ripple out into the large. What does it mean to “queer” contact improvisation? An act of queerness is an act of resistance, to what is dominant, what is “normal”, what is “accepted”. Contact improvisation invites us to explore all the possibilities that are available when we come together in dance. Queerness invites us to make the familiar unfamiliar, and to challenge assumptions, including the assumptions that we ourselves make. By bringing our focus to the queer, we hope to create a community that is more inclusive and attuned to the uniqueness of each dancer, always striving to relate through difference, to practice solidarity and not assimilation. We hope that through this jam, we can uncover new or often unseen ways for us to express ourselves through dance and to witness one another more deeply.
