About the event

Margaret Belton's Tribute to Patsy Cline at The Freight
'Today, Tomorrow & Forever' is a tribute to the life and legacy of Patsy Cline. This annual tribute showcases her top hits, rare gems, and gathered stories from collected biographies and those who once shared moments with her. It is an honoring of who she was and the music she imprinted on so many of our hearts and lives. Catch this tribute to one of the greatest country singers of all time, performed by a group of terrific musicians imbued with the spirit of Patsy Cline!

“Margaret Belton. Chanteuse extraordinaire and a radiant soul with a smile that lights up the stage and makes us all feel alright. A warm contralto voice that soars from a powerful growl to sultry, to sweet, and the most lovely stage presence—well, there’s just no one like her in all-the world." ~ Kathryne Cassi

Margaret Belton, that rare artist who fuses her exceptional talent with a genuine warmth which makes audiences feel they’re part of the big beautiful family. She founded her Patsy Cline Tribute band called ‘The Patsychords’ in 2010. The spirit of Patsy then led Margaret to accomplish her critically acclaimed portrayal of Patsy Cline in Always... Patsy Cline twice at the Altarena Playhouse in Alameda CA, twice in New Orleans LA at the Stage Door Canteen, and once at The Woodminster Amphitheater in Oakland CA. She received a Theater Bay Area Award for outstanding performer in a musical for her portrayal of Patsy Cline and then in November of 2018 she took home another Theater Bay Area Award for her outstanding performance as Angela who’s character was heavily inspired by the great Dolly Parton in Honky Tonk Angels. Margaret is so overjoyed and honored to be back at the Freight for her 11th annual Tribute to Patsy Cline with her stellar band of musical comrades.

Her band features Freight favorite Maurice Tani on guitar, David Phillips on pedal steel, Rob McCloskey on bass, Henry Salvia on piano, Ken Owen on drums, Jeanine Richardson on tambourine and Kathleen Salvia on harmonies.

Maurice Tani is a San Francisco born and based singer-songslinger, known for his wry/rye-to-romantic writing, agile guitar style and expressive singing. Tani has been the source of untold, but exquisite suffering on the west coast Americana scene for over twenty years. Tani now has ten albums to his credit. The latest is “All In!” (Little Village - LVF1052), a broad-spectrum tincture of folk, soul, Americana and gospel.

Henry Salvia wanders the musical landscape of America, stumbling from the sophisticated noir of Maurice Tani, past the raucous blues of Jenny Kerr, around the Amerikinda of the Flying Salvias, betwixt the polished metal of Metallica and between the hippie hedonism of Big Brother and the Holding Company, staggering into the oasis of Margaret Belton and her tribute to the great Patsy Cline.

David Phillips, a Georgia native, has played guitar, dobro and steel guitar in the Bay Area since the 1980’s. Eclectic and adventurous, David has worked with Tom Waits, Peter Rowan, Charlie Hunter, Johnny Paycheck and the San Francisco Symphony.

Jeanine “J9” Richardson: “Tower of Power guitarist Jeff Tamalier calls Jeanine “J9” Richardson “The Motor”. Her trademark percussion and dancing behind, in front and across the stage for various Bay Area groups beginning with monster dance outfits Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra and Big Bang Beat, and more recently, Gayle Lynn & The Hired Hands, 77 El Deora and Valerie Jay & The Americanos, pushes the band and engages the audience. Remember, friends: You can't spell tambourine without the last three letters of Jeanine!”

Kathleen Salvia started out singing in SF's gay cowboy bars many moons ago. Since then, in various ensembles, she's shared the bill with the likes of Albert King, Charlie Musselwhite, and Ronnie Montrose; recorded with Bobby McFerrin, Carlos Santana, Jessica Mitford & Maya Angelou; and backed up John Denver and Lyle Lovett in concert. 2024 saw the release of Flying Salvias CDs Henry’s Hideaway and Amerikinda.

Rob McCloskey, (a.k.a. 'RobbyMac') has been a stalwart on the Bay Area Club and Venue scene for the last four decades performing with and opening for Country, Blues and Rock luminaries such as Bob Weir, Eric Burdon and Robert Cray. He can be heard on numerous Singer/Songwriter audio and video recordings and enjoys providing musical theory lessons and practical performance tactics to the next generation of Bay Area Bassists, through his private tutelage.

Ken Owen is a Bay Area native that has shared the stage with such luminaries as Emmy Lou Harris, Peter Rowan, Buddy Miller, and Gillian Welch, and has self-published ten books of his poetry, essays, and songs since 2010.
