Clara Bijl killed it at our Member Mixer last February, and — to our delight — our favorite local comedian is returning to the City Club. She’ll have new material but the same sharp wit and hilarious perspective on current affairs and living in Berkeley with her husband, two kids, and dog. Won’t it feel great to laugh?!
On Wednesday, September 3, at 7 p.m., Clara will bring her distinctive brand of standup to Arts & Culture. Tickets for this program are $5 for club members and students and $10 for non-members. Please register early so we can be sure to accommodate everyone comfortably.
Clara was born in Paris and raised in the Alps. She attended school in Germany and Switzerland and then went to college in South Carolina, which, Clara explains, “is what you do if you’re a young Frenchwoman who has learned English from rap songs.” Her next “logical” move was to New York City to try her hand at stand-up. To support that career choice, she worked as a waitress in a French restaurant in Chelsea, for a guy who was renting his apartment for film shoots and music videos, and as a coat check girl. All of which, of course, provided rich material for her gigs.
Although Clara describes herself as “internationally unknown,” she has appeared on stages around the US and Europe for the last twenty years, including at SF Sketchfest, the Edinburgh Fringe, and comedy festivals in Montreux, Switzerland; San Diego; and Charleston, SC. She performs regularly at local clubs, including Punch Line Comedy Club in San Francisco, and for many corporate and private events. She has two two cds, and , which both will be for sale after her set.
Clara also writes comedy. She wrote for a successful French/Swiss TV comedy for several years (“Yes,” she says, “there is comedy in Switzerland!”); wrote and directed a mockumentary reality TV comedy show, T; created a French comedy series, Le Shrink; and recently produced .
Clara’s latest project is raising money to produce a film, a comedy she has written called The one sentence plot summary: “After losing her future kid’s adoption papers to a drug dealer, a good-natured woman must team up with her selfish neighbor, quirky college friend, and shroom-enthusiast landlady to recover them before it’s too late.”
These days, we all can use some comic relief. Bring your friends to Clara’s curtain call at the City Club!
