It’s been four wonderful years since the artist-decorated pianos first appeared on First Street, bringing music, color, and community connection to downtown Benicia. These beloved public art pieces have become a source of joy and creativity for residents and visitors alike. The baby grand was painted by Josie Grant, and the upright by Phyllis Hartzell—each transforming the instruments into vibrant works of art.
To celebrate their impact and close out the season, the Benicia Public Library and the Arts and Culture Commission invite the community to a Closing Concert on Thursday, September 25, from 5:30 to 6:30 PM at St. Paul’s Park, where both pianos are currently located.
We’re also issuing a Call for Artists! If you’d like to perform a short piece (up to 5 minutes), please email
