This intermediate-level course focuses on building the technical and conceptual skills required to create taller, more complex glass forms. Students will work on straight-walled vessels such as tumblers, elongated vases, and other vertically oriented designs, with an emphasis on control, proportion, and intentional form.
Instruction will include strategies for planning and executing taller pieces, including how patterns and proportions shift as a form becomes taller, wider, or narrower. Students will practice pulling and dropping necks from both the blowpipe and punty rod, creating controlled constrictions, and managing heat and rotation to keep taller pieces centered and stable.
This course is intended for students who can confidently gather from the furnace, create a starter bubble, establish a jack line, and transfer a piece to the punty. This level of experience is typically met by completing Introduction to Glassblowing at Waterfall Arts or an equivalent 16-hour introductory course at another studio, plus an additional 16 hours of instruction. Additional experience may be gained through repeat introductory courses, private lessons, or workshops.
Students who are new to glassblowing should begin with an Experience or Introduction to Glassblowing class before enrolling in this course. If you have questions about whether this class is appropriate for your skill level, please contact an instructor or the Studio Manager for guidance.
