Beirut-born multi-instrumentalist RAMI GABRIEL has long pursued his passion for Swana music and string instruments from within the diaspora, studying with renown ethnomusicologists Alfred Gemil (Cairo), Mehmet Bitmez (Istanbul), Dr Scott Marcus (UCSB), as well as legendary nay player Bassam Saba.
A prolific composer, Rami plays the oud, buzuq and guitar, drawing from the melodic and rhythmic elements in classical Arabic and Turkish music, the rhythms and riffs drawn from the blues and the improvisational magic of jazz.
Whether solo or in his various projects - The Arab Blues duo, the Rami & The Reliables quartet, the Dadad project, Rami is constantly exploring new directions in sound, the latter project taking his electrified buzuq into the far-out realms of post-punk and noise. He has played with blues luminaries like Buddy Guy, opened for the likes of Zakir Hussein and Bela Fleck, and toured across America and Europe.
For this first Inside Track on Hybrid Aesthetics in Reinventing Tradition, Rami will share and demo his innovative approach to technique, tone and composition, with special attention to modes of improvisation. Having lived and toured throughout Canada, the US and Europe, his work embodies hybridity by integrating traditions of improvisation in live music performance. This Talk will highlight his aesthetic of fluidity across genres, instruments and musical traditions.
This insightful Talk will be followed right after by a solo concert
