September 19, This workshop is designed to teach the best technique for Black & White Landscape Photography, it begins with a welcome meeting at 8 pm to orient the photographers at the Split Rock Lighthouse Visitor Center to the next day’s events.
September 20, our sunrise photoshoot begins at 6:30 am at the Trail Center in the Split Rock State Park. From there we will shoot on the ledge rock and pebble beach area. At 9 am we will meet for breakfast at the Rustic Inn in Castle Danger. Then from 11 am until 2 pm we will meet in the classroom at Tettegouche to review work and learn post processing techniques to optimize B&W imaging.

About the Instructors:
John Gregor
John Gregor has owned and operated ColdSnap Photography for over 30 years. He has 45 years experience as a professional photographer.
Gregor’s photographs have been published in numerous regional and national magazines, his fine art prints are in museums and collections worldwide. During his career he has worked on some interesting projects including: 2 years as the Track Photographer at Canterbury Downs Racetrack, a month long photographic project in Africa documenting the first attempted kayak decent of the Blue Nile from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert, a photography project on horse-mounted military musical bands with trips to England, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, and Sweden, funded by the University of St. Thomas, photographic documentation of over 100 Scientific and Natural Areas in Minnesota, “Northland Wildflowers” a guide to the Minnesota Region.
For the last five years Gregor has been wintering in Utah and Mexico. His work in Mexico has resulted in an exhibit and a photographic workshop at Mueseo y Archivo de la Fotographia the premier photographic center in Mexico City.
Gregor currently spends his time in Bluff Utah, Mexico, and Duluth Minnesota.
Hayes Scriven
Hayes Scriven is the Site Manager at Split Rock Lighthouse, a position he has held since 2019, with 19 years of experience in the museum field. In 2020, Hayes embraced photography to capture the unique beauty of the North Shore. A self-taught photographer, he specializes in landscapes and astrophotography, focusing on the dark skies over Lake Superior. His work—featuring breathtaking images of the Milky Way and Northern Lights—has been widely published in regional magazines, newspapers, and online outlets, earning him recognition as a skilled interpreter of the night skies along the North Shore.
Cost is $125 per person/MNHS members save 20%. A series ticket can be purchased for four photography workshops for $400.
