As part of our events commemorating the 160th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War, Bayside History Society is pleased to welcome Civil War reenactor and author M.X. Kane for a presentation on his captivating historical fiction trilogy, Period Rush: Tales of the Fighting 21st.
About the books:
In a commemorative year for the Civil War, tens of thousands of reenactors gather in Pennsylvania to recreate the Battle of Gettysburg, driven by a passion for history and a desire to immerse themselves in the past. Among them is Zachary Taylor, a young history teacher from Georgia, who guides fellow reenactors experiencing the event for the first time. As they delve into this immersive experience, they begin to feel a growing sense of unease and personal conflict, compounded by the arrival of the enigmatic Silas Gray and his intoxicating absinthe. After partaking in the drink, the reenactors find themselves transported to June 29, 1863, separated into Union and Confederate groups, and faced with the harsh realities of war. As they navigate the challenges of their new roles as soldiers amidst the chaos of the impending Battle of Gettysburg, they must confront not only the external threats of battle but also their internal struggles, ultimately discovering the true meaning of sacrifice, camaraderie, and the weight of history. The journey culminates in a test of their character and resolve as they grapple with the question of whether they were sent to save or change history, realizing that their playtime has ended and the stakes are now all too real.
About the author:
This first-time author was born & raised on Long Island and has been a Civil War Reenactor (or "Living Historian") for over 22 years. Inspired by his first visit to Gettysburg, the author embarked on a writing project yielding a three-volume work describing the odyssey of seven modern day Civil War Reenactors as they are kidnapped and forced to live through the actual Battle of Gettysburg. A blend of historical & science fiction, Tales of the Fighting 21st is not only about the battle and the American Civil war but also the internal struggles in which we all suffer to find true peace.
Admission is $10.00 for BHS members and $15.00 for non-members.
